A Halloween Horror Wallpaper: Darkness Bleeding Child
October 30, 2010 / 16103
A Halloween Horror Wallpaper: Darkness Bleeding Child / The imagery surrounding Halloween is largely an amalgamation of the Halloween season itself, works of Gothic and horror literature, in particular novels Frankenstein and Dracula, and nearly a century of work from American filmmakers and graphic artists, and British Hammer Horror productions, also a rather commercialized take on the dark and mysterious. Halloween imagery tends to involve death, evil, the occult, magic, or mythical monsters. Traditional characters include the Devil, the Grim Reaper, ghosts, ghouls, demons, witches, pumpkin-men, goblins, vampires, werewolves, martians, zombies, mummies, pirates, skeletons, black cats, spiders, bats, owls, crows, and vultures.

WITCHES
What would Halloween be without witches? Witches and witchcraft date back to at least ancient Greek and Roman times. Even then there was a distinction made between “white” witchcraft (benevolent) and “black” witchcraft (evil), the former of which was tolerated by the government of ancient Rome.
With the spread of Christianity in the 4th century, witchcraft was more and more associated with devil worship, an association it never truly had. But because witchcraft - or Wicca - was practiced by pagans who worshiped pagan deities, the Church demonized the religion and those who followed it. The association stuck and resulted in hundreds of thousands of innocent men and women being tortured and killed as witches over hundreds of years, including during the well-known witch trials in Salem, Massachusetts.
The association with evil created the Halloween caricature of the witch as an ugly, wart-studded hag with an evil, toothless grin.

Amazing Halloween Decoration Ideas 6 / The 2007 Halloween yard haunt display was based on a collection of frightful witches, scarecrows, and jack-o’-lanterns. This is probably our favorite of all the yard haunt displays we’ve done over the years. The combination of witches in the background with a foreground pumpkin patch filled with creepy scarecrows, jack-o’-lanterns, corn stalks, hay bales, bendy willows and fog really looked spectacular.
