This Is The Unofficial Theory Of Sci-Fi Connectivity

October 31, 2009 / 2608

If you’ve ever suspected that all of your favorite shows, books and comics all took place in the same universe, you’re probably right. And we’ve got a chart to prove it. Click through for awesome.

We’ve concentrated on three types of crossovers between series: Direct Crossover, where characters from one series or another have actually met in a story; Easter Egg, where elements of one series have appeared in another (often as geeky in-jokes), and Brand Crossover, where market forces have brought two disparate things together for no good reason (See Transformers/). I’m sure that there are some that we’ve forgotten, but that’s what the comments are for. For now, just enjoy the fact that Aliens theoretically can be said to exist in the same world as Battlestar Galactica… and get your fan-fiction typewriters revving. Read more …

A Distant Soil a Science Fiction / Fantasy Comic Book , Poster, and Video San Diego Comic Con ‘08: Colleen Doran

August 28, 2009 / 14203

Distant SoilA Distant Soil is a /fantasy comic book series written and illustrated by Colleen Doran, and is the work for which she is best known.

The story, which Doran created at the age of twelve, centers on a young girl who is born heir to an alien religious dynasty, and explores issues of politics, gender identity, and tolerance.

Its strong characterization and elegant art style has inspired the Young American Library Association to profile the book in their quarterly journal, and it has been nominated for the Spectrum Award for Best in the Other category in 2001.

A Distant Soil was originally published by Wendy and Richard Pini’s WaRP Graphics, but Doran subsequently left the company due to an acrimonious dispute with Richard Pini, whom she alleged was attempting to claim copyright on her work.

The WaRP version of the story was never reprinted, despite its unusual all-pencil style, although in one collected volume of the new series Doran did reprint the short Distant Soil story “R & R” that had appeared in a WaRP anthology. Read more …

Aliens Ufo Gifs Animated: Extraterrestrials in Fiction (10 Gifs Animated)

April 20, 2009 / 4996

Sky Alien : Aliens Ufo Gifs AnimatedHistorical ideas

The fictionalization of extraterrestrial life occurred before the 20th century. The didactic poet Henry More took up the classical theme of Cosmic pluralism of the Greek Democritus in “Democritus Platonissans, or an Essay Upon the Infinity of Worlds” (1647). With the new relative viewpoint that understood “our world’s sunne / Becomes a starre elsewhere”, More made the speculative leap to extrasolar planets,

the frigid spheres that ’bout them fare;
Which of themselves quite dead and barren are,
But by the wakening warmth of kindly dayes,
And the sweet dewie nights, in due course raise
Long hidden shapes and life, to their great Maker’s praise. Read more …

Andy Serkis on Fantasy-Adventure Inkheart; Poster, Production, Plot and Trailer

January 22, 2009 / 7536

Inkheart is a 2008 fantasy film, directed by Iain Softley. It is based on the 2003 German novel of the same name by Cornelia Funke. The film was first slated for release on March 19, 2008, but has been pushed back to December 12, 2008 in the UK and January 23, 2009 in the US, partially because of New Line’s marketing worries in connection with the now-concluded 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike.

Production

The author of the book on which the film was based, Cornelia Funke was quoted as saying that “we had our second screening (summer 2007), which went well, and I really loved the movie, but they are still changing things, especially at the end.”

As with the production of The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian,[citation needed] the production progressed very slowly. The American release was originally slated for Christmas 2007, but then was changed to March 19, 2008.

In addition, due to the writer’s strike, the film was further pushed back and is now set to open January 23, 2009.

Inkheart was filmed at Shepperton Studios near London, England and on location in 2006/2007. Read more …

Battlestar Galactica Proves Environmentalism Is A Waste Of Time

December 24, 2008 / 4418

Stop sorting your paper and plastic into recycling bins, urges economics professor Art Caden. Instead of trying to save the planet, we should be preparing for its inevitable demise, and building our own Battlestar.

Writes Caden:

If environmental stewardship obligates us to be mindful of future generations in making our day-to-day decisions, what should we do? Should we be recycling paper and preventing people from building parking lots to save trees? Or should we acknowledge that the planet will be destroyed sooner or later and try to find ways to build something like Battlestar Galactica so the species will be preserved?

At first glance, the goal of recycling more and conserving more seems appropriate, even desirable. Read more …
