BETH’S BOTTOM 5

5. THE HAPPENING - The looked amazing! It was written and directed by the great M. Night Shyamalan. It even had Markie Mark!…But even with all these things, this film left me wanting to do what the characters in the movie were doing…kill myself. You would think that since it was an M. Night Syhamalan film it’d have this amazing twist right!? WRONG! Aside from waiting for things to get really interesting (which never happened) all I wanted to do was Knock Mark Whalburg out for being such a douche bag, bad actor and get my money back for wasting my time at the theatre! The best part about going to see this was the popcorn…and the guys jumping off the roof in the film cause that was gory as hell, but that’s it! Read more …

Death Jr. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and a Thing for Locked Boxes

September 16, 2008 / 4254

Death Jr. is a video game for the PlayStation Portable. The PSP iteration was the very first PSP game ever shown publicly and advertised as a killer-app. It was released to fairly mediocre reviews and noted for numerous problems about the camera, gameplay and uninspiring graphics, but was praised for its Tim Burton-esque themes and quirky characters. The majority of those issues were corrected with the release of the Wii edition. Slightly more well-received was the comic book adaptation by Gary Whitta and Ted Naifeh, which includes two three-issue miniseries.

The game, movie, and comic book are about the teenage son of the Grim Reaper, named DJ. His father tried many times (all of them failed) to stop his son from creating chaos at every school he has been in. Now is DJ’s last chance. If he creates chaos one more time, he’ll be sent to military school. He meets his new friends at this school: Pandora, a girl with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and a thing for locked boxes; Stigmartha, a girl who bleeds from her hands whenever she’s nervous; Smith and Weston, conjoined twins who are very smart and conjoined at the head; The Seep, an armless, legless, foul-mouthed kid in a vat; and The Dead Guppy, a character who speaks for himself.

The friends go on a field trip to a museum, where they find a locked box that Pandora wants opened, so DJ opens it to impress her. Unfortunately, all hell breaks loose and demons run amok. It’s up to DJ to stop them, revert the town back to normal, all the while making sure dad doesn’t find out. Read more …

The bliss of newlyweds Jack (Eason Chan Yik-shun) and Ching (Jo Kuk Tso-lam) is dashed when the former is critically injured one evening by a hit-and-run driver. He surprises his doctors by making a swift recovery and is soon discharged from the hospital. However, Jack now finds himself plagued with an inexplicable side effect, experiencing horrific visions of a female suicide victim every time he sneezes. This and other strange occurrences leave him wondering if the apartment he and Ching recently moved into is haunted.

On top of this, Ching is now behaving quite strangely, sitting immobile like a zombie and writing the character for “dead” hundreds of times on a piece of paper. Things quickly go from bad to much worse, as the girl begins displaying pronounced signs of possession. Unsure of what to do, Jack and old friend September (Cherrie Ying Choi-yi) follow Ching one day and discover that there is a great deal about her past that she has never revealed, including an old boyfriend who committed suicide.
