Nasa spacecraft takes amazing thermal image of Saturn moon that looks just like Pac-Man
April 5, 2010 / 669608
Scientists operating the Cassini spacecraft in its orbit around Saturn have discovered that one of the planet’s moons looks remarkably like the hungry 1980s video game icon Pac-Man.
Cassini took this thermal image of the surface of Mimas and produced a map which looks just like the video game character.
The probe measures temperature differences across the object’s surface and scientists believe the variations are probably related to the diversity of textures in surface materials.
Lighter areas of the moon which appear in the image may retain the heat better than others, scientists explain.
Mimas is only around 250 miles across. It has a distinctive scar called the Herschel Crater, which has led to many comparisons with the ‘Death Star’ from the Star Wars movies.
The Cassini team says the creation of the crater itself may have played a key role in the changing conditions across vast swathes of the moon’s surface.
The project is a joint venture between the Nasa, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency.
Its mission was recently extended until 2017.
Saturn has 62 moons with confirmed orbits. The largest is Titan, which is larger than the planet Mercury.
The Scary Bits: Pathetic Plugs and Sundance Scares - Review
September 18, 2009 / 2906
Looks like next month’s Sundance Film Festival is offering four films that could accurately be labeled as “horror,” which isn’t a whole lot — but of course it’s all about quantity over quality. The quartet of creepy flicks are Paul Solet’s Grace; Jonathan Liebesman’s The Killing Room; Duncan Jones’ Moon; and a Norwegian import called Dead Snow. All four sound intriguing enough, but I’m particularly looking forward to Grace and Moon, because I’ve been hearing stuff about both since, like, pre-production. Check out Dread Central for a handy little recap of these four movies, and of course keep your browser set to Cinematical once Sundance hits. Looks like it’ll be Erik, James and myself causing all sorts of cinematic damage. Read more …
UFO on the Moon in Apollo Days-Debunked? Review
August 16, 2009 / 7600
In UFO on the moon in Apollo Days? You decide I posted a photograph that is alleged to be an official NASA photograph showing a UFO observing activities of Apollo 14 in 1971.
I had searched the NASA GRIN (Great Images in NASA) database for both numbers assigned to the photo, as well as performing a web search. I was unable to find any photo online with those numbers, although they are apparently NASA sequence numbers.
Of course, not all NASA photos may be online. So I dug a little deeper.
Shown above is an authentic NASA Apollo 14 image (#AS14-66-9306). Look at the lower right–see the bursts of color? Another UFO photo?
Nope.
It shows Antares on the Frau Mauro Highlands on Feb. 5, 1971. And here’s the explanation NASA provided:
A front view of the Apollo 14 Lunar Module “Antares”, which reflects a circular flare caused by the brilliant sun. The unusual ball of light was said by the astronauts to have a jewel-like appearance. At extreme left, the lower slope of Cone Crater can be seen.
For good measure, I found another Apollo 14 photo with lights nearby. This is #AS14-67-9367. cropped to accent the lights in the right corner. Read more …
