The Skeleton Key (2005), Poster, Sinopsis, Plot, Cast, Coment and Trailer

June 12, 2009 / 23653

The Skeleton KeyCaroline (Kate Hudson) is a young hospice worker who is disillusioned by the reality of this type of work. She is despondent about the death of her own father, who died alone because she was unaware of his situation and was living life on the road with a traveling rock band. Caroline feels guilty about this and has devoted herself to becoming a person who makes a difference.

Caroline finds herself confronted by the same type of avoidance that she gave her own father when a patient dies and nobody from his family is even interested in picking up his belongings. The last straw comes when Caroline finds boxes of items belonging to other recently deceased patients, all being stored in a dumpster, thrown out as garbage. Caroline quits her job at the hospice and follows up on a lead for a position as a personal care assistant.

A lawyer named Luke (Peter Saarsgard) fields the phone call from Caroline, and he sets up an interview with the family. Caroline visits the secluded New Orleans home, which is an old mansion near a bayou swamp, and meets her potential employers. She will be caring for Ben Devereaux (John Hurt), who seems to have suffered some kind of stroke. His wife, Violet Devereaux (Gena Rowlands), seems to immediately dislike and distrust Caroline, but Luke smooths it over and encourages Caroline to take the position. Perhaps because she finds Ben’s condition compelling, Caroline accepts and moves into the mansion.

On her way there to move in, Caroline stops by a rural gas station and notices odd details around the rundown facility, including a line of red dust that has been placed across the threshold of the building. The strange proprietors have hung animal bones and other talismanic items around the place. Read more …

Horror (2002) Expect Nothing Less Than Sheer… Horror

May 11, 2009 / 3708

Horror (2002)Okay, I first want to state that I had seen Dante’s first effort “Desecration” and thought that it sucked. Of course it didn’t totally suck, but it fails on the same level that “” failed on - its beautiful crap.

I really wanted to love both films after hearing that this filmmaker was a Godsend to fanatics everywhere – so me being the huge fan I am was excited. My excitement was lessened after seeing “Desecration,” and even more so after “.” “” has so many flaws it would be impossible to name them all off, but I’ll try.

At the beginning of the film the audience is introduced to a group of stoners escaping rehab and venture off to Rev. Salo’s house of , unaware that is what awaits them. Then one kid turns blue, pukes, and then never seen of heard from again after the camera cuts as all the blue guy’s friends are trying to help him! What the hell? We as an audience are introduced to a character only to forget about? Why was he there in the first place? Dumb.

The editing is also done poorly. We as an audience haven’t the slightest clue as to what the hell is happening - usually that would be effective, but in order for it to be effective the audience must feel for the characters, so it didn’t help too much that the actors were on and off – but mostly off – and the delivery of the dialogue is bad… maybe because the dialogue given was god-awful. So, in terms of the effective “what the hell is going on?” scenario, I really couldn’t care less.

It doesn’t help when the ending makes no sense and is cheesy as hell.

Oddly, the set design and cinematography are unbelievably gorgeous, and the camera-work is terrific. The landscape of a snowy wilderness is both haunting and beautifully Gothic. The use of Christmas lights and ornaments is the perfect contrast to the eerie going-ons (I will admit, some of the more macabre moments are deliciously effective, just most are just plain stupid) and the lonesome, haunted look of some of the homes. The use of the POV shots, ala “The Evil Dead,” are very cool… and the goat is creepy. More of the goat would have been more than welcome.

Sadly, overall “” was just a perfect example of what we all hate in the genre some of us hold dear. I have noticed a lot of people, as well as critics, have loved this movie and admired its strangeness, but as much I love and generally strange surreal rides, I couldn’t like this movie. It’s still worth a look for its look, but (at least for me) there is nothing else beneath its beautiful, Gothic surface.

Hopefully Dante’s next effort – “Satan’s Playground” – will be more of a departure of what “Desecration” and “” were: beautiful trash.

Top 10 Favorite Horror Movies For 2008!

December 27, 2008 / 5694

10 - - It’s tough to claim a fear more deeply effective than home invasion, and this little chiller knows it. Rookie director Bryan Bertino truly understands the power behind the of a masked figure as well as an apparently motiveless crime.. and extra kudos for knowing when to really let a shot linger to keep suspense going instead of trying to generate it through frenetic editing. It’s a nice touch to have a couple we’re to root for on the outs instead of deeply in love, though it’s the trio of iconic assailants that one leaves with the strongest impression of.

9 - - I admit I didn’t think it was going to work as well as it did but there’s a good 20 minute early stretch in this film where I was truly scared, post 9/11 flashbacks aside. This clever kaiju update for the surveillance generation was paced, unsettling and way darker than I figured it would be. Wonderful to see a truly horrific and original once again. Read more …

Anamorph (V), Poster, Synopsis and Trailer: Release Date: December 09, 2008

October 22, 2008 / 1258

Release Date: December 09, 2008
Director: Henry Miller
Writer: Henry Miller
Starring: Willem Dafoe Scott Speedman Peter Stormare Clea DuVall
Studio: IFC Films/Dimension

SYNOPSIS

“Anamorph” stars Dafoe and Speedman as detectives tracking a killer who re-creates the perspective-distorting painting technique “anamorphosis” in a bizarre series of murders.

Anamorph is an independent psychological film directed by Henry S. Miller and starring Willem Dafoe. Dafoe plays a seasoned detective named Stan Aubray, who notices that a case he’s been assigned to bears a striking similarity to a previous case of his. The film is based on the concept of anamorphosis, a painting technique that manipulates the laws of perspective to create two competing images on a single canvas.

Dafoe turned down the role initially but reconsidered after a chance meeting with producer Marissa McMahon on a flight from Los Angeles. The film also has cameo appearances by Mick Foley and Debbie Harry.

The film had its world premiere at the 2007 Milwaukee International Film Festival in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where star Willem Dafoe started out in theater. It was also shown at the Williamstown Film Festival in November the same year. The film opened in New York City on April 18, 2008 and in Los Angeles on May 2, 2008. Read more …
