Video Trailer Species : The Awakeing

September 15, 2009 / 1429

species-2We all know that SciFi films are not exactly the top of the bar when it comes to movies, or movies for that matter. I am here however to stun you all. As bad as Species 3 was, Species 4 is actually kinda fun. Thats right Species 4: The Awakening actually has some merits.

Great special FX, good acting and even the expected low grade shooting styles have been stepped up. This is an MGM SciFi movie not a LionsGate SciFi movie. You can interpret that however you like.

The premise of the movie is a young woman discovers she’s actually the genetic crossbreed between human and alien. She discovers her loving uncle is in fact the man who made her, and they set off on a cross country trek to Mexico to find out why she is sick.

Species is one of those franchises that has gone down the toilet very steeply as of recently and I am happy to say that although #4 is nowhere near as good as the first film was it is night and day better then Species 3. Its action packed, the FX are nicely done and their is a good enough body count to keep you hungry fans happy. Read more …

Terror Toons (2002 - R), Poster, Synopsis, Review and Trailer

September 1, 2009 / 5635

Rated R for violence/gore and some nudity.

Directed by Joe Castro. Written by Rudy Balli.

The cast includes: Beverly Lynne, Lizzie Borden, Kerry Liu, Fernando Padilla, Brandon Reininger, and Jack Roberts.

Review:

Terror Toons, starring porn icon Lizzie Borden and Beverly Lynne, has a bad porn feel to it, only without the titillating sex and nudity. And cohesive plot.

Candy and Cindy are sisters left home for the night when their dad and “mom” leave for a wedding. Cindy receives a DVD called Terror Toons, which unleashes supposed cartoon characters Dr. Carnage and Max Assassin.

I’ll give Beverly Lynne and Kelly Liu credit, they at least try to do a halfway decent job, but they are let down by their director and the special effects department. Joe Castro doesn’t so much film as he just happens to keep a camera in the room as his story unfolds. The special effects would be laughable if they weren’t so nauseating…not nauseating in the sense of “ooh, brains” but in the sense of “ooh, special effects goop.” Read more …

Horror (2002) Expect Nothing Less Than Sheer… Horror

May 11, 2009 / 3708

Horror (2002)Okay, I first want to state that I had seen Dante’s first effort “Desecration” and thought that it sucked. Of course it didn’t totally suck, but it fails on the same level that “” failed on - its beautiful crap.

I really wanted to love both films after hearing that this filmmaker was a Godsend to fanatics everywhere – so me being the huge fan I am was excited. My excitement was lessened after seeing “Desecration,” and even more so after “.” “” has so many flaws it would be impossible to name them all off, but I’ll try.

At the beginning of the film the audience is introduced to a group of stoners escaping rehab and venture off to Rev. Salo’s house of , unaware that is what awaits them. Then one kid turns blue, pukes, and then never seen of heard from again after the camera cuts as all the blue guy’s friends are trying to help him! What the hell? We as an audience are introduced to a character only to forget about? Why was he there in the first place? Dumb.

The editing is also done poorly. We as an audience haven’t the slightest clue as to what the hell is happening - usually that would be effective, but in order for it to be effective the audience must feel for the characters, so it didn’t help too much that the actors were on and off – but mostly off – and the delivery of the dialogue is bad… maybe because the dialogue given was god-awful. So, in terms of the effective “what the hell is going on?” scenario, I really couldn’t care less.

It doesn’t help when the ending makes no sense and is cheesy as hell.

Oddly, the set design and cinematography are unbelievably gorgeous, and the camera-work is terrific. The landscape of a snowy wilderness is both haunting and beautifully Gothic. The use of Christmas lights and ornaments is the perfect contrast to the eerie going-ons (I will admit, some of the more macabre moments are deliciously effective, just most are just plain stupid) and the lonesome, haunted look of some of the homes. The use of the POV shots, ala “The Evil Dead,” are very cool… and the goat is creepy. More of the goat would have been more than welcome.

Sadly, overall “” was just a perfect example of what we all hate in the genre some of us hold dear. I have noticed a lot of people, as well as critics, have loved this movie and admired its strangeness, but as much I love and generally strange surreal rides, I couldn’t like this movie. It’s still worth a look for its look, but (at least for me) there is nothing else beneath its beautiful, Gothic surface.

Hopefully Dante’s next effort – “Satan’s Playground” – will be more of a departure of what “Desecration” and “” were: beautiful trash.

Narok aka Hell (2005), Horror Movie

February 2, 2009 / 5458

INFO

While traveling, a crew of documentary makers met a horrible fate when their van fell off a cliff. Though only one of them really died, the rest were ‘accidentally’ dragged into hell where each were tortured according to their sins.

“Hell” begins with a massive accident involving the employees of Mask Mass production, a Bangkok video production company, driving through the night as they have a destination to reach and a deadline to beat. Unfortunately fate has decided to get in the way and they crash head on with an oncoming truck. They are all rushed to hospital with really bad injuries, however we then cut to 25 hours earlier and we see how all our protagonists come together prior to meeting up for the trip. They all have there own foibles and problems to deal with, but they have a deadline to meet at work and issues are put aside as they all head off on their trip. Again we see the driver battling against sleep but this time he avoids the truck and they all believe they have had a lucky escape. They stop the van and step outside but soon realise all is not as it seems, are they really dead or are they in hospital battling to stay alive? Regardless, they have fallen into another dimension and unfortunately for them it seems to be in Narok – Hell! Read more …
