Ju-On: The Grudge Game For Wii - A haunted house simulator based on the horror film “The Grudge”

Ju-on: The Grudge is a haunted house simulator based on the horror film “The Grudge”.
Making a horror game for a “casual” audience requires a reorganization of priorities. While something like Resident Evil is intent on scaring the player, there are a lot of gameplay elements aside from fear, like inventory management and even accuracy. These elements make for a well-rounded game, but they can actually prevent the player from experiencing all the game’s scares.
AQ Interactive’s Ju-On: The Grudge, being released in North America this October by XSEED, takes out all the “survival” from a survival horror game to create what XSEED calls a “haunted house simulator,” focused entirely on scaring the crap out of players over and over again. And from what we saw, it works.
Ju-On consists of a series of playable scenarios in which normal people are brought into creepy haunted places. In the one we saw, a young woman’s dog runs into a dark old building, and the woman goes in to find it. The game is controlled using the pointer and the Wiimote’s buttons — the pointer controls both the camera and the in-game flashlight, and buttons are used to walk forward and backward, and to investigate objects. Batteries found throughout the level maintain the flashlight’s power.
The room is so dark, and the flashlight so dim, that you can typically only see a small circular area at one time. Items that can be picked up glint noticeably. After exploring the first room (some kind of office in a warehouse, it looked like) the person playing the demo went for a door. The door opened a crack, and then the camera jerked down to reveal a creepy ghost toddler thing staring through the door. Yes, we jumped a bit. The creature closed and locked the door, with the dog behind it, forcing the player to look around for the key. After finding the key on the floor, the player went into a small room with another door at the end. She opened that one, and immediately a pale hand jumped out and grabbed the on-screen avatar’s forearm. Then the camera panned up to, well, this. Arrow indicators on the sides of the screen directed the player to shake the Wiimote to break the apparition’s grip, after which the creature disappeared and the path was blocked. It was around here that our demo concluded.
It’s interesting that both this game and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories hit upon the idea of the combat-free horror game. Not only does fighting monsters provide a barrier to the game’s fright moments, in a way being able to defeat them undermines the horror themes. In most horror games, a skilled player can actually defeat the creatures (with notable exceptions like Silent Hill 2’s Pyramid Head, who just happens to be one of the most terrifying monsters in any horror game), making the game more of a power fantasy than a true fright. In both of these games, you can escape the creatures at best.

Body-switching future soldiers fight giant mechs among other things in this new first-person shooter from Polish developer Techland. We check it out at E3 2006.
LOS ANGELES–2003’s Chrome was a futuristic first-person shooter starring a character with the best hero name in human history, Bolt Logan. Logan adventured as a mercenary in a universe where corporations vied for control of an element known only as “chrome.” Developer Techland’s follow-up, Chrome 2, seems to be heading in a slightly different direction with its mythos. While Chrome 2 still takes place in a similarly futuristic era, you don’t play as Logan again. Rather, you’re a solider in the military of the future–but not just any soldier. See, in this era, the dead aren’t necessarily dead. When you die, a procedure can be performed to take your consciousness and transfer it into a new body. Sound familiar? Maybe that’s because it’s basically the plot to the 1992 sci-fi campfest Freejack, although here, you don’t get to play as Emilio Estevez, and Mick Jagger isn’t trying to kill you. Here, once the procedure is done to you, you’re forced to pay off the cost with five years of military service. And if the demo of the game we saw at E3 2006 is any indication, perhaps death might be a more reasonable proposition, given what you’ll be in for.
The core gameplay concept behind Chrome 2 (apart from the fact that it is a first-person shooter, first and foremost) is that your soldier can upgrade his body in a whole host of ways. The game aims to include around 200 types of weapons, but even outside of standard upgrades, you’ll actually be able to straight-up steal other people’s bodies when required. Read more …

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories for Wii - Review, Photos, Trailer
July 15, 2009 / 3993
Silent Hill is a really lousy place to end up after a car crash. The town is full of creepy people who don’t offer the slightest bit of help, walls of ice spontaneously erupt from the ground without even so much as a warning, and undead creatures lunge at anything that moves. We got to check out the beginning of the Silent Hill remake today, dubbed Shattered Memories, and came away shaken up.
The introduction to your haunted experience is pretty imaginative. You are sitting in the office of a psychiatrist with a list of questions in front of you. These are personal questions, mind you, which are a little awkward if you happen to fill out this form during a trade-show event. It asks if you like to drink when you need to relax, if abstract ideas intrigue you, and if you have ever cheated on a significant other, among other questions. The doctor didn’t seem to believe all of our answers, but he seemed like a bit of a quack anyway. This psych test shapes how your adventure plays out. For instance, when we talked to a bartender in the game, she asked if we wanted a drink because we looked freaked out, but the main character declined the offer, just like our psych test foretold.
The game begins after you crash your car. Like the game this is based on, you play as Harry Mason and must find your daughter. We were told that the story veers drastically from that of the original, though we didn’t see any other story sequences to compare. The beginning is extremely slow-paced. You hold a flashlight in your right hand that is controlled by the Wii Remote, and you move your character with the Nunchuk. There is light puzzle-solving in this segment. For instance, we needed a key for a locked door and had to unzip the jacket of a mannequin to find it.
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories E3 2009 Debut Trailer [HQ]
Things get creepy after that. After finding out that we live in Silent Hill, we stumble back to the beginning where we crashed our car, but things get a little strange. A swing sways for no reason, and if you take a picture of it, you can see a girl sitting down. You can’t interact with her, but it sets the mood for what’s going to come next.
Walls of ice shoot out of the ground! You can’t climb over them (they’re cold!) so you must find a way around. Easy enough, right? It’s not so easy when a horde of undead creatures is chasing you. There isn’t any combat in Shattered Memories, so you have to run like heck whenever you see an evil being. This set off an elaborate chase sequence in which we crashed through doors, quickly scaled walls, and knocked down bookcases to slow our pursuers, all in the scant hope that we would survive.
Silent Hill is a creepy game. Even standing on a noisy show floor, it was easy to get sucked into this world. If the rest of the game can keep up the foreboding atmosphere, this could be the go-to scary game for the Wii when it comes out later this year.
