Popular Culture and Ghost Culture
October 6, 2008 / 2370
Ghosts are prominent in the popular cultures of various nations. The ghost story is ubiquitous across all cultures from oral folktales to works of literature.
Perhaps the most recognizable ghost in English literature is the shade of Hamlet’s father in the play The Tragical History of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. In Hamlet, it is the ghost that encourages the title character to investigate his “murder most foul” and seek revenge upon King Claudius, the suspected murderer of Hamlet’s father. Read more …
Can Entities Hurt?
August 15, 2008 / 1045
Anthony North: Psychic entities can come in many forms, varying from incubi, to ghosts, to aliens, and even the ‘hallucinations’ conjured up by a magical adept.
Yet the most virulent tend to appear during poltergeist infestations. Occasionally such entities go further than simply being seen. There are attested cases of such entities actually hurting people, even leaving marks on the body. Does this suggest the entities are real, or can other elements explain the phenomenon? To me, such entities are basically hallucinations.:
The mind constantly interprets the data received from the senses, but should that data be interrupted, such as through tiredness, altered states, natural illusion, etc, a strange phenomenon occurs. Read more …
Blockbuster Ghost Audio-Video
August 7, 2008 / 1233
The author provides only this information, “todo pasa en la cara del encargado.” Roughly meaning that it happened right in front of the manager. The video shows a video store employee stocking shelves. His cart seems to get a shove from unseen hands, then video boxes inexplicably begin to fall to the floor, frightening the employee. It appears to be a store surveillance video, although a camera could have been set up to resemble such a vantage point. Could the effects in this video be faked? Of course. Do we know that they were faked? No. Without further information or an investigation, we cannot say for certain what is happening here. Phone Ghosts, Shadow People, FBI’s X-Files

Some interesting links I’ve found this week:
• Camera Phone Ghosts – Results of an experiment: This site asked readers to take pics with their camera phones to see what popped up. Some appeared to have faces. Had they unwittingly captured the images of ghosts? Or are they imaginary?
• The Official Shadow People Archives – If you’re curious about shadow people, this site offers lots of first-hand accounts of experiences with those spectres. They also have a page of other ghost stories.
• FBI’s Unusual Phenomena Listing – Ever wonder what the FBI has on the paranormal? This is their own page of Freedom on Information Act releases on Majestic 12, cattle mutliations, Roswell, Project Blue Book, and UFOs. All dated 1998.

Ghost hunters seek spirits in Southeast Texas with EVP
August 3, 2008 / 997
Inside a century-old house in Orange strange things have been happening, the owners say.
Family members claim they’ve seen candlesticks fly off shelves and empty rocking chairs that rock, stop, then rock again. They say they have heard voices that don’t belong calling out their names.
Who are they going to call?
Around here the Texas Society of Paranormal Investigators.
Don Dennis, the group’s founder, interviewed family members Saturday to prepare for a future investigation.
Next month, he said, a team of 10 ghost hunters will set up equipment that includes infrared cameras, a thermal camera and audio recorders.
Afterward, team members will review any abnormal images or unusual voice recordings - known as electronic voice phenomena - and try to identify a logical explanation before chalking the cause up to ghosts or spirits.
The investigation might require team member Mike Ardoin, who accompanied Dennis on the interview, to crawl through the attic, where they believe a spirit could be squatting.
