Travelers preparing for trips to the Far East and Polynesia are being warned by the British Foreign Commonwealth Office (FCO) to take extreme caution following a powerful tsunami that struck Samoa and an earthquake that later rocked Indonesia.

The alert advises against all but essential travel to Samoa and American Samoa following Tuesdays tsunami, which has killed at least 100 people and caused extensive damage in the small island nation. The tsunami, with tidal waves up to five yards tall, was triggered by an earthquake that registered between 8.0 and 8.3 on the Richter scale.

Another earthquake, measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale, struck Indonesia early this morning. The quake was centered northwest of Padang in Sumatra. Several hundred miles away in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, people could feel shaking in tall buildings.

In the wake of this seismic activity, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a regional tsunami watch for India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.

Two British people describe the shock and devastation caused by the the powerful earthquake which struck the city of Padang on the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

Philip Proctor moved to Padang from Scarborough with his wife and daughter at the beginning of September. His intention was to teach English there. He says that experiencing the earthquake might make him change his plans.

We live about four or five miles from the centre of Padang. Our house was built around 1975. Older houses like this are much stronger and the amount of structural damage where we are is minimal. It’s the newer buildings in town that have had the biggest damage. Read more …
