Many Companies Forgoing Halloween Costumes This Year

Costumed employees on Halloween are ghosts of the past in many Polk County businesses, but the tradition lives at the Colonial Bank in Bartow and a few other establishments.
“We’ve done it for years and years,” said Colonial switchboard operator Priscilla Gilbert, who is the go-to person for Halloween makeup. “It wouldn’t be right if we didn’t do it.”
The spectre of not having a Halloween celebration is an apparition these employees can do without.
But the spirits of Halloween are gone at most Polk County businesses, including banks that once made a big deal of the occasion.
Betty Wojcik of the Lake Wales Chamber of Commerce said she knows of no Lake Wales businesses that dress for Halloween. She’s considering a promotion for next year, saying it would have “nostalgia” benefits.
