Sarah Palin Effigy Hung in Halloween Display

October 31, 2009 / 2977

If he wins the November 4 election, Obama will be the first African American to become U.S. president.

West Hollywood is known for its large gay population and its liberal politics. It hosts a large and flamboyant outdoor Halloween parade each year.

Palin, who is seen as more conservative than running-mate McCain, has been a lightning-rod of criticism from the left since her nomination to the ticket.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - An effigy of U.S. Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin hanging by a noose as part of a Halloween display drew complaints on Monday, but local officials said the homeowner was covered by free speech rights.

A mannequin dressed to resemble the Alaska governor, with her trademark beehive hairdo and glasses, was hung by the neck from the eaves of the home in famously liberal West Hollywood.

On the roof, a mannequin of Republican presidential candidate John McCain, protruded from the chimney surrounded in flames, holding his head as he was apparently burned alive.

“We have been getting some phone calls this morning complaining about it but if (the homeowner) isn’t in violation of municipal code we have no reason to cite them,” West Hollywood spokeswoman Helen Goss said.

“People have First Amendment rights (to free speech),” Goss said. “I would speculate that if it’s part of a Halloween display then its political satire.” Read more …

Wanted: Creepy Hollywood Celebrities for Halloween

October 31, 2009 / 3255

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Want a creepy celebrity to scare trick-or-treaters this Halloween? You could do no better than rocker Marilyn Manson, and you’d be really lucky to land Michael Jackson. But O.J. Simpson? Sorry, he’s in jail.

Those three topped a list of the 20 creepiest celebrities, released by market research firm e-Poll, which tracks the popularity of actors, musicians and others for Hollywood’s major film and TV studios and other companies.

Manson was No. 1 with an overall creep factor of 76 percent and a popularity rating of just nine percent, meaning that more than three-quarters of people responding to e-Poll found him creepy and only nine percent found him appealing.

He was followed by Jackson with 67 percent creepy/14 percent appeal, and third was Simpson who was recently convicted of robbery and kidnapping charges in Las Vegas. He had a 59 percent creepy/three percent appeal rating.

There are two kinds of creepy in Hollywood celebrity, explained e-Poll’s chief executive Gerry Philpott.

There are the kind — like the three above — from whom some people might run and then there are types like horror novelist Stephen King, whom many people find fascinating precisely because they are spooky.

King made the list at No. 4 with a creep factor of 51 percent but strong fan appeal of 61 percent.

“Who would you rather have a beer with: Stephen King or Andy Dick?,” said Philpott to illustrate his point.

Anatomically Correct Strawberries and Cream Heart for Halloween Recipe

Servings: 5

Author Notes: Most of the recipes I’ve seen in the past for brain gelatin molds have focused on achieving a gross looking”gray matter” color. While this might be anatomically correct, trust me, it won’t make people want to eat it, regardless of how good it might taste. The infamous Kitty Litter Cake gets the same reaction — nobody actually wants to eat the darn thing, but it sure is funny.

This one bridges gap — the color is realistic enough for the effect (but not realistic as to be unappetizing), and the flavor is delicious. The strawberry coulis makes a nice blood-like effect on the serving platter or bowl (we used a stainless steel bowl for ours to give it that “hospital” look).

Links to buy the mold are at the end of this recipe.
