And the Solar System’s Coldest Spot Is …

September 26, 2009 / 4448

What’s the coldest spot in the solar system? For now, that distinction belongs to permanently shadowed craters near the moon’s south pole, according to the first results from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft announced today at a NASA press conference.

And the Solar System's Coldest SpotShivering in at a mere 33 degrees above absolute zero, the regions are likely places to find deposits of water ice, a resource that would be in demand if astronauts ever live on the moon. Another instrument has returned hints of water ice in some of these cold spots, scientists announced at the press conference, but it also showed signs of water ice in impossibly hot places, too. More data are needed, as every scientist in the press conference managed to note. Read more …

What do you get when you take a bit of the happiest place on earth and mix it with a dash of spooks and screams? Why, Disney’s “The Haunted Mansion” of course. What starts out as a masquerade ball turns into a night of deception, poison, and death. Flash to the present where the house, now on the market, catches the eye of former resident-look-alike, Sara Evers who’s Real-estate husband, Jim, decides to take her family to the residency for the weekend. But once inside it seems surprises wait. An old music box with a ball of light; should she follow it? A secret passageway; who knows where it will lead? There is a crystal ball with a whirlwind of rhymes; if you have the time, and, a trip to the graveyard and a wedding; if they can make it out alive.

Summary:

Welcome Foolish Mortals to the masquerade ball of the millennium. Everyone is dancing, laughing, and enjoying the gallantry of the evening whilst Elizabeth and Ramsely (Terrence Stamp) sneak off for a secret meeting where a note is passed. What follows is a deadly toast.

Flash forward to Real-estate Agent Jim Evers who has just received a phone call with the prospect of adding an expensive listing to Evers and Evers Realty. In hopes of securing a lucrative prospect and, make amends for his current neglectfulness as a husband and father, Jim proposes the family go on a vacation, which includes a quick pit stop at the mansion. Pulling up to the equally neglected mansion the Evers are greeted by an obliging gate which leads them down a pathway to a potential Real-estate goldmine. But once out of their cars, the Evers decide to explore the grounds where they stumble upon, a graveyard? As Ramsley the Butler interrupts the Evers discovery with news that the roads have been flooded from the storm, he equally insists the Evers stay until the conditions improve. The Evers are then introduced to Master Gracey (Nathaniel Parker), who seems strangely obsessed with Sarah. Read more …

September 25, 2009 / 5231

I’ve decided to do mine a bit different. I watched Last House on the Beach on the 30th, but do to time restrictions and wanting to participate…I am going to include it. I will also be switching my list at random because I work at and get to rent pre-streets every week. So there is probably going to be a bunch of new horror I will be able to see before it hits release date.

Awesome Science: Floppy Wings = Efficient Flight

September 25, 2009 / 4895

Next time you’re on an airplane, check out the wings. Every bolt and rivet is flush with the surface, creating an extremely smooth shape. The wings of the desert locust are not nearly as sleek: They’re covered with ridges and veins, and they twist and deform as they flap. But these features make the insect an efficient flier, albeit at lower speeds, according to a new study.

master-flyerMaster flyer. Smoke trails show how air flows over the twisting and efficient wings of the desert locust.

Biologists and engineers have long known that insect wings are more complex than just flat, rigid flapping plates. But most models of insect flight have treated them this way because scientists needed to simplify their calculations and lacked a detailed picture of how the wings actually work. Read more …

Plot

A global cataclysm occurs which leads to the end of the world and has survivors struggling for their lives, while a US government agency called the “Institute for Human Continuity” attempts to use ships to ensure the survival of the human race.

The film is inspired by several hypotheses that state that the ancient Mayan predicted a doomsday event will occur sometime around the 2012 northern hemisphere winter solstice.

Production

Director Roland Emmerich and composer-producer Harald Kloser co-wrote a spec script titled 2012, which was marketed to major studios in February 2008. Nearly all studios met with Emmerich and his representatives to hear the director’s budget projection and story plans, a process that the director had previously gone through with the films Independence Day (1996) and The Day After Tomorrow (2004). The film was shopped around with a production budget of $200 million. Read more …
