The Terror Skull of Concord Epilog, The Eyes, The Badass, Feeling of Dread

August 27, 2009 / 4163

“I HAVE ALWAYS considered myself to be a realistic and down to earth person,” says Meera M. In the last few months of 2008, however, Meera had an experience that profoundly shook her sense of what was logical and what was possible. It happened in an old graveyard where a cryptic, unsettling gravestone is said to exert unnatural forces.

Meera grew up and still lives in Concord, Massachusetts, an old town rich in colonial history. As you’d expect, the town has many ghost stories and legends of spooky goings-on. In the heart of town at Monument Square, amid the beautiful 18th century homes and buildings, is the Colonial Inn, which is said to be haunted. Just up the street there is a white Catholic church with an adjacent graveyard, where one can easily find headstones dating back to the Revolutionary War. And up on the hill in this cemetery is a gravestone like no other. “Apparently, investigators came to Concord and found this stone to be haunted,” Meera says. She had gone up to look at it a few times, but only during the day.

It’s an unusual stone alright. At its top is carved an eerie skull over a banner that reads:

UK X-Files: Mass Sightings From Cornwall To Wales (Solved?)

August 26, 2009 / 2853

A secret US spy plane - the existence of which has never been officially admitted - may have been behind a number of sightings, newly released files suggest today.

american-stealth-could-the-uss-mysterious-military-craft-be-responsible-for-some-sightingsMore than 70 witnesses including police and military personnel reported sightings in Devon, Cornwall, South Wales and Shropshire in the early hours of Wednesday March 31, 1993, with many describing a large, low-flying object which made a low humming sound.

In a briefing note to the Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (ACAS), Sir Anthony Bagnall, the head of the Ministry of Defence’s desk wrote that there was evidence of an unidentified craft evading UK defences.

He said he would not normally concern Sir Anthony with sightings but continued: ‘You may wish to be aware of a recent particularly unusual incidence of sightings over the UK, involving descriptions that match some of the reported characterisations of the so-called “Aurora”.’

The Aurora was the name given to an unmanned US reconnaissance aircraft supposedly developed in secret ‘black’ programmes in the 1980s and alleged to be capable of hypersonic flight.

The plane was the subject of much speculation at the time and the British Government was forced to deny allowing experimental flights over the UK. Read more …

Mistery of Viking Steel Imported From Afghanistan

August 26, 2009 / 15255

Boffins at the UK’s famous National Physical Laboratory (NPL) - birthplace of the Dambusters’ bouncing bomb and perhaps the internet - say they have used an electron microscope to analyse Viking swords. In a surprise twist, it turns out that the old-time Scandinavian pests, many of whom moved to England to become our ancestors, actually imported their best steel from Afghanistan.

“Sword making in Viking times was important work,” says Dr Alan Williams, a top archaeometallurgist at the Wallace Collection, a London-based museum of objets d’art which has a massive array of old arms and armour.

How to Create a Spooky Mansion Party for Halloween

August 25, 2009 / 3147

Party for HalloweenDifficulty: Moderate

Instructions

Step1

Cover all of your furniture with white sheets. This includes tables, chairs, appliances, and sofas. The idea is to make the place look untouched for years and to hide all of your modern pieces.

Step2

Cobweb up your house! You’ll want these things hanging from the ceilings, scattered across chairs and furniture, and even placed around the food. Don’t forget to throw in some fake spiders!

Step3

Buy a few props. You can find old, eerie paintings that look aged and place them around the room. Whatever you find that is old and creepy, make it work with the room! You may want to come up with something that a former “owner” of the mansion would have owned. Read more …
