kaindy-lake-kazakhstan KazakhstanThe Republic of Kazakhstan in Central Asia is in the process of building the world’s first according to some local media reports. If these reports are to be believed, the authorities have already allocated a large plot of land in the city of Almaty for this ambitious project. Facilities to be built within the complex will include a guesthouse, theatre and translation service. A purpose built UFO landing pad and checkpoint will be attached to the embassy.

Kazakhstan’s government believes open contact with aliens is imminent and by being the first nation to specifically create such facilities they are convinced they will reap enormous financial and economic rewards. The Kazakhstan Government also see this as a chance to demonstrate their nations forward thinking policies. Read more …

SkeptimediaUsing ghost stories to teach critical thinking

January 22, 2008. Instead of complaining to editors and producers about media stories that promote belief in the paranormal, we might try turning those stories to our advantage by using them to teach critical thinking skills. Complaining to newspapers and television networks is probably a waste of time, anyway. The thinking seems to be, even among traditionally news-oriented newspapers, that to compete with the Internet and hundreds of cable TV stations they have to pander to the public’s strong attraction to stories about the supernatural and the paranormal. Such stories make life seem interesting or give hope that there might be a next life where things are interesting. Whether the media is correct in their dismal assessment of the general public’s desire to be entertained and amused while not having to think too deeply, I can’t say.

We can always hope that there are enough people out there who really want to know the truth about ghosts and spirits to make it worth our while to try to help them deconstruct some of these stories. We don’t need to go into the depth of, say, Neil Postman’s How to Watch TV News or John Allen Paulos’s A Mathematician Reads the Newspaper. We can let the story and our situation dictate how deep we choose to go. Read more …

race-to-witch-mountain-2009-posterSYNOPSIS

During the opening credits, news of UFO sightings around the world appear.

Jack Bruno (Dwayne Johnson) is a cab driver in Las Vegas, who is picking up and dropping off passengers to the UFO convention at the Planet Hollywood Casino and Hotel. One of his passengers is Dr. Alex Friedman (Carla Gugino), a failed scientist who is giving speeches about legitimate scientific theories of UFOs and outer space.

The next day Bruno is approached by two large men telling him that Wolff would like to see him. After fighting them, Bruno drives off, later noticing two children, Sara (AnnaSophia Robb) and Seth (Alexander Ludwig) sitting in the back seat of the cab. They tell him they need to go to a certain destination and are willing to pay all they have ($15,000) to get there. They lead him to a run down house in the middle of nowhere. Meanwhile, Major Henry Burke (Ciaran Hinds) is searching for information on the two aliens that landed some days earlier.

When they arrive at the house, the children tell Bruno that they will be re-united with their relatives soon. Before leaving Bruno hears a crash coming from the house. He is startled to find them hiding behind a couch. Though grateful for his concern, the children tell him they must continue their journey without him, as they can trust no one. Nevertheless, Bruno decides to follow them, which leads him to the basement of the house. There the kids are pursued and attacked by a strange creature as they retrieve an object in a plant. They manage to escape from this creature. Read more …

Cryostasis: The Sleep of Reason, Poster, Previews & Features and Trailer

Cryostasis: The Sleep of ReasonIs it cold in here, or is it just 1C’s new survival horror game?

There’s a lot going on in 1C’s upcoming : Sleep of Reason, and not all of it makes sense. A body heat system that requires you to keep your temperature up while on board a frozen ship stuck in the middle of the Arctic Circle. Former crew members who’ve apparently come back from the dead to haunt the ship and do you grievous bodily harm. You can even step into the minds of NPCs and, then, travel back in time to change events in the past. All of this, plus some creepy scares, add up to an intriguing, if sometimes confusing game from 1C and developer Action Form.

You’ll play as kick-butt, two-fisted meteorologist Alexander Nesterov, who mysteriously finds himself in the bowels of the “North Wind.” By game’s end, you’ll make your way through the entire ship (which, developers told us, is about the height of a nine-story building), all the while uncovering what happened on board after it became stuck in the ice. That ice will be a constant problem for you as you make your way around. Because the ship is frozen, you’ll need to keep a constant eye on both the outside temperature and your own body heat levels, measured by a small meter in the lower left-hand corner of the screen. If you stay exposed to the chill for too long, it’s game over for Nesterov. Luckily (and perhaps illogically for a ship that’s been stranded in the ice for very long), you’ll find frequent spots where you can regain your body heat.

Once you’ve manged to warm back up, though, you’ll probably have other problems on your hands in the form of psychotic enemies you’ll encounter. The explanation for their appearance was a bit confusing to us, but the gist of it is that these are former crew members who were taken over by the cold when the North Wind was trapped; some fought for their lives and others embraced the cold, turning them into the enemies that want you dead. You’ll start the game with just your bare hands to defend yourself, but soon enough you’ll find weapons you can use, such as shotguns, rifles, and fire axes. The game is set in 1968, so don’t expect laser cannons (or even submachine guns, for that matter) but a few good blasts from a tommy gun look to be enough to take down most enemies.

When you aren’t warming your tootsies or blasting enemies back to the nether-reaches, Alexander will be using his mental echo ability–which will allow him to peer into the minds of other players and, even more oddly, travel back into the past to try to rectify things. For instance, during one level, you’ll encounter a sailor who met an unfortunate end when a pane of glass exploded right in front of him, firing a shard of glass into his neck. Using the mental echo ability, you can travel back in time, take over that sailor’s body just seconds before that explosion, and move him out of the way. It seems as though saving the different crew members who died on board in this manner will be a key to unlocking the story and reaching the end of .

With frozen combat, creepy-looking mummified bad guys, telepathy, and time travel of sorts, there’s definitely an “everything but the kitchen sink” vibe happening with . Will that imaginative approach result in a varied experience? We’ll find out when the game is released on PCs this October.
