According to some, the belief in ghosts as souls of the departed is closely related to the ancient concept of animism, which attributed souls to everything in nature, including human beings, animals, plants, rocks, etc. Nineteenth-century anthropologist James Frazer stated in his classic work, The Golden Bough, that souls were seen as the creature within that animated the body:
“If a man lives and moves, it can only be because he has a little man or animal inside, who moves him. The animal inside the animal, the man inside the man, is the soul. A second powerful earthquake has hit the Indonesian island of Sumatra, a day after the first devastating quake left more than 500 dead, thousands of people buried in rubble and a major city cut off from the outside world.
Today’s quake, of magnitude 6.9, struck in the early hours about 180 miles from the epicentre of yesterday’s more powerful tremor out at sea.
There were 529 confirmed deaths, according to relief officials, but they warned the figure was likely to rise. Read more …
