September 8, 2008 / 2272

Plot

Chinatsu, an immortal vampire from Japan, looks for her family’s killer, and also her vampire sire. She mercilessly searches throughout many time periods and centuries in order to achieve her revenge.

The first story-arc of six issues has been published with the latest issue released in 2008 and a tradepaperback due in 2008.

There are more story-arcs planned, but that still has to be determined pending a new artist.

While C.B. Cebulski was once better known as a Marvel editor than a comics writer, that’s not the case anymore. Cebulski’s recent writing experience has not only earned him some loyal fans, but Newsarama has confirmed the writer’s just gotten an exclusive contract from Marvel and some writing work in television (this interview was conducted just prior to the WGA announcing that it was going on strike).

After leaving his editorial job at Marvel in early 2006 to concentrate more on his writing, he returned to Marvel later that same year as an “editor-who-also-writes.” Between the writing projects he’s done for Marvel like his Fairy Tales series and The Loners miniseries, he’s also written a couple video games and released a few creator-owned titles like , Compass, and Wonderlost.

And recently, as Cebulski announced in San Diego, he’s also been traversing the world, searching for new comic book talent through his cleverly titled ChesterQuest (the “C” in C.B. stands for Chester). Publicized both here on Newsarama and through Cebulski’s ChesterQuest blog, the search promises to land 12 brand new artists a pencilling job at Marvel after it finishes up in January. Read more …

Savage Dragon: Free Comic On Line

September 5, 2008 / 6622

Savage Dragon is an ongoing American comic book series created by Erik Larsen and published by Image Comics. The comic features the adventures of a superheroic police officer named the Dragon. The character first appeared in Megaton #3 (July 1986).

Creation and publication history

Like many of Erik Larsen’s characters, the Savage Dragon was created by Larsen while he was a child in elementary school. It is loosely based on The Creature from the Black Lagoon, a movie series by Universal Studios. In his youth, Larsen drew the Dragon in homemade comic books. The original Dragon, inspired by elements from Captain Marvel, Batman, Speed Racer and later The Incredible Hulk, differs greatly from the modern incarnation. After launching Savage Dragon in a professionally published comic book, Larsen returned to the original and reworked his designs into the characters William Jonson, a police officer ally of the Dragon, and Flash Mercury, the “Spectacular Dragon”.

Much later, a greatly redesigned Savage Dragon was featured in two issues of Graphic Fantasy, a self-published title with a small print run, published by Larsen and two friends. In this incarnation, the Dragon was a widower and a retired member of a government-sponsored superhero team.

Subsequently, the Dragon made another appearance in the third issue of Gary Carlson’s Megaton anthology in its Vanguard strip, which Larsen had been drawing. In these appearances, the character of the Dragon remained basically the same as it had been in Graphic Fantasy, with a few details modified (such as the inclusion of his wife, who was dead in his previous incarnation). Both the Graphic Fantasy and Megaton issues containing the Dragon have since been reprinted in high-quality editions. Read more …

Finding the hospital abandoned, Grimes sets off to find out where everyone went. He finds the hospital’s cafeteria crowded with the living dead, and barely escapes with his life. He returns to his home, only to find it abandoned as well — and he catches a shovel in the back of the head. When he awakens, again, he discover that a young boy named Duane Jones had hit him, believing him to be a zombie. After a brief introduction, Duane’s father Morgan explains what has happened while Rick was comatose: a plague of the dead has swept all civilization. Duane and Morgan have taken up in Rick’s neighbor’s house, hoping to ride it out. Read more …

Propaganda pulls the Sword from the stone - then puts it back

A long time ago, I was handed the first two series by the Luna Brothers; Ultra and Girls. Ultra was a fun, if clichéd book that can easily and conveniently summed up as a “Superhero Sex in the City”. For me, Girls can just as easily be summed up as “bloody awful”. I got to the bit with the giant sperm and giant egg and realised I was reading one of the most unintentionally funny comics for a long time. This opinion wasn’t shared by the co-workers at Nostalgia & Comics, who went on to vote Girls as one of their books of the year. But the annual shop vote was a democratic thing. This review isn’t. Hence Girls was awful. Read more …
