The word wraith is a Scottish dialectal word for “ghost, spectre, apparition”. It came to be used in Scottish Romanticist literature, and acquired the more general or figurative sense of “portent, omen”. In modern fantasy literature, it usually designates dangerous and evil beings following use of the word in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Ringwraiths.
Often, a wraith will be a more evil apparition, and tends to be more frontal or aggressive.
The word “wraith” according to the OED first attested in 1513, in Gavin Douglas’ translation of the Aeneid with a meaning of both “ghost, apparition of a deceased person” and “an immaterial or spectral appearance of a living being”.
Also believed to be the image of death in many ways. With a black cloak and a skelital body a wraith is confused with a messenger of death, or holy figure.
In 18th- to 19th-century Scottish literature, it was also applied to aquatic spirits. In 19th-century usage, it came to be used in a metaphoric sense to refer to wraith-like things and to portents in general. Read more …

Mummies of humans and other animals have been found throughout the world, both as a result of natural preservation through unusual conditions, and as cultural artifacts to preserve the dead. In religion, folklore, and mythology a demon (or daemon,[1] daimon from Greek: δαίμων daimōn) is a supernatural being that is generally described as a malevolent spirit.
In Christian terms demons are generally understood as fallen angels, formerly of God. A demon is frequently depicted as a force that may be conjured and insecurely controlled. The “good” demon in recent use is largely a literary device (e.g., Maxwell’s demon), though references to good demons can be found in Hesiod and Shakespeare.
In common language, to “demonize” a person means to characterize or portray them as evil, or as a source of evil. The mythical Sweeney Todd was accorded the title Demon Barber of Fleet Street in a 1936 film. The 19th-century Australian cricketer Fred Spofforth was nicknamed “the Demon (Bowler)”, partly because of his tactic of inspiring fear in batsmen. Read more …
