The End of the World

Where: 118 S.E. Fourth St.
Cost: $10 (Oct. 30), $15 (Oct. 31-Nov. 1). Tickets available through Iowatix. $1 off with donation of two canned food items, $2 off with three or more items.
About the event: typically rely on fiction for scares. You can go back home knowing you’re safe from and clowns.
The Des Moines Social Club is looking to inject a bit of reality into their haunted attraction and party. The theme (and name): The End of the World.
The theme is derived from the theory that even civilized countries are only seven bad days from annihilation. At the attraction there are seven rooms, illustrating each day. The first event, conceived months ago, is financial collapse.
“It is a bit politically charged,” Des Moines Social Club founder Zachary Manheimmer said of the end of the world being played out. “The show isn’t partisan, but we do want to encourage people to remember to vote.”
Friday and Saturday night feature live music and DJs spinning outside. On Oct. 31 The Horseshoe Spatulas, Why Make Clocks, Ticksh, Maxilla Blue and North of Grand perform along with Chicago’s DJ RadioHiro and the fire dance troupe Vesuvius Tribe. On Nov. 1 DJs El Chill, Reaktor, Mindblur and Flatform spin.
Other activities include haunted games like Bags played with body parts, an “attend your own funeral” exhibit and costume contests. Beer and wine are free with admission Oct. 30 through Nov. 1.
Don’t let the theme scare you too much. Manheimmer insists there are still lots of laughs and ironic twists, but they may be more “Dr. Strangelove” than “Texas Chainsaw Massacre.”
